J-1 Waiver Procedure

How Do You Check the Status of a J-1 Waiver?

J Visa Waiver Online allows an applicant to check whether DOS has recorded the DS-3035 materials and required supporting documents and to review the status of the waiver recommendation case. DOS recommends allowing approximately one month after a complete submission before the first status check.

Use J Visa Waiver Online and the waiver case number

DOS directs applicants to J Visa Waiver Online and the Check the Status function. The waiver case number generated through the DS-3035 process is used to retrieve the case.

Keep that case number with the filing records because DOS also uses it for later waiver applications and Advisory Opinion requests associated with the same exchange visitor.

The system tracks applicant and supporting materials

The online status can show whether DOS recorded the DS-3035 application, fee payment, DS-2019 or IAP-66 copies, and required supporting documents from the third party associated with the waiver basis.

A missing status entry does not necessarily mean a document was never sent, because intake and matching can take time.

Allow approximately one month before the first check

Current DOS instructions and FAQs advise applicants to allow approximately one month after all required documents have been submitted before checking status online.

Checking immediately after mailing or immediately after a third party transmits a document can create unnecessary concern because the item may not yet have been entered into the system.

Third-party documents may take three to four weeks to appear

DOS separately warns that status updates for supporting documents sent by third parties can take at least three to four weeks to appear. These materials may include a No Objection Statement, an IGA request, a USCIS I-612 finding, or a Conrad State 30 request.

If an item still does not appear after a reasonable intake period, first verify that the responsible third party actually sent it through the required DOS channel.

The status system can identify missing documents

After the Step 2 and Step 3 materials are matched to the case, J Visa Waiver Online can indicate whether required items remain missing. That information can help determine whether the case is merely pending review or is incomplete.

Applicants should also keep their address, telephone number, and email current through the DOS online system because the Waiver Review Division may need to contact them.

After DOS forwards the recommendation, check USCIS

The DOS status stage ends when the Waiver Review Division forwards its recommendation to USCIS. DOS states that it no longer has jurisdiction over the final waiver case after that transfer.

From that point forward, the applicant should use the USCIS case information for the final adjudication. A favorable DOS recommendation is not itself the final waiver approval.

CHECKLIST

J-1 Waiver Status Check

  • Use the J Visa Waiver Online status system and enter the waiver case number.
  • Confirm that the DS-3035 application, copies of the DS-2019 or IAP-66 forms, and fee payment are shown as received.
  • Check whether any required Step 3 supporting documents from a third party are shown as received.
  • Do not assume a recently submitted document is missing merely because the online status has not updated yet. DOS states that status updates are not immediate.
  • If a required third-party document does not appear, verify with the embassy, agency, USCIS, state health department, or other submitting organization that it was actually sent.
  • Keep the applicant contact information current through the DOS online system so the Waiver Review Division can reach the applicant if additional information is required.
  • Once DOS forwards its recommendation to USCIS, follow the case with USCIS because DOS states that it no longer has jurisdiction over the waiver adjudication.
