J-1 Advisory Opinions

How Long Does a J-1 Advisory Opinion Take?

Department of State processing estimates can change. DOS currently publishes a specific Advisory Opinion estimate while its general waiver instructions publish a broader estimate, so applicants should check the current government pages before relying on a timeline.

DOS currently publishes more than one processing estimate

As of September 2026, the dedicated Advisory Opinion page states that the Waiver Review Division takes approximately four to six weeks to review an Advisory Opinion request.

The general J-1 waiver instructions separately state that current processing times for advisory opinion requests and waiver applications are estimated at six to ten weeks.

Treat the estimates as guidance, not deadlines

Because the two DOS pages currently differ, applicants should treat the posted numbers as estimates rather than guaranteed adjudication periods and should check the current government pages before planning another immigration filing around them.

Status can be checked when there is a case number

DOS states that a person with a case number can use the J Visa Waiver Online system and select the status-check function to review the Advisory Opinion status.

Incomplete records can delay a useful determination

A request should include the complete program record at the outset. Missing DS-2019 forms, unclear funding information, or incomplete residence evidence can make it harder for DOS to resolve the question presented.
