After J-1 Waiver Approval

When Should You Stop Checking DOS and Start Checking USCIS?

J Visa Waiver Online tracks the Department of State recommendation stage. After WRD forwards its recommendation to USCIS, DOS says it no longer has jurisdiction and the applicant must use USCIS for later case status.

DOS status covers the recommendation process

J Visa Waiver Online shows receipt of the DOS filing materials and the progress of the Waiver Review Division case.

The jurisdiction changes after the recommendation

DOS expressly states that once the recommendation is forwarded to USCIS, the Department no longer has jurisdiction over the waiver case-status stage.

USCIS uses its own case-status system

USCIS provides Case Status Online using a USCIS receipt number.

A DOS recommendation is not the final waiver

The applicant remains subject until USCIS actually grants the waiver.
