J-1 Waiver Problems

What If DOS Does Not Show Your No Objection Statement as Received?

A No Objection Statement is a third-party supporting document and must reach the Waiver Review Division through the authorized government channel. If it does not appear in the online waiver status, verify the transmission with the responsible government office and allow for the DOS intake delay before assuming the statement was never received.

The applicant cannot submit the statement personally

For the standard No Objection procedure, the home country's embassy in Washington sends the statement through the authorized channel to the Waiver Review Division.

DOS does not treat a copy supplied by the applicant as a substitute for the required government transmission.

A designated ministry can use the alternate route

DOS also permits a designated ministry in the home government to issue the statement and send it to the U.S. Embassy in that country for forwarding to the Waiver Review Division.

The important point is that the statement must travel through the official government route.

Allow time for the document to appear online

DOS states that updates for third-party supporting documents can take at least three to four weeks to appear in J Visa Waiver Online.

The FAQ also advises allowing approximately one month after documents were submitted before relying on the status system.

Verify the transmission with the government office

If the statement still does not appear, confirm with the embassy or ministry that it was actually sent and that the correct waiver case number and applicant information were used.

DOS states that the Waiver Review Division will not follow up with third parties to obtain missing supporting documents.

Receipt does not guarantee a favorable recommendation

Once the statement appears as received, DOS still must evaluate the waiver recommendation application.

A No Objection Statement is required for this basis but does not itself approve the waiver.
